Hallig Hooge, Nordfriesland, Germany : Hallig Hooge is a Hallig (lets say its an island even 'though geographically a Hallig is not considered an island, even 'though its completely surrounded by the North Sea). The 'Halligen' are located in Northern Germany, close to Denmark. They get flooded by sea water several times a year. The houses are built on artificial hills (warft) so they are usually safe from the rage of the North Sea. The views are simply gorgeous!

Das Gruene Band: Point Alpha Military Museum and Baumkreuz near Ifta, Germany : http://www.pointalpha.com/

Point Alpha is located on the border between Hesse and Thuringia between Rasdorf and Geisa in the Rhoen Mountains. Located in the middle of nature-preserve Rhoen and other nature sanctuaries, this historic facility with its authentic buildings and grounds is a reminder of the partition of Germany and the horrors of the Cold War. The entire complex is a unique witness of the power struggle between two political systems. Here outposts of NATO and Warsaw Pact stood facing each other.
Former US Point Alpha, the only remaining former border observation point of the US Forces in Hesse, was declared a National Monument in 1995.Original buildings and equipment have been preserved. Sections of the fence that used to form the border between the 2 Germanys and an East German observation tower may be visited.

"Baumkreuz" near Ifta is dedicated to the memory of the "Iron Curtain". Part of the Iron Curtain is still visible, alongside newly planted trees. A walkway leads us along the "green belt", the former "death strip" turned into a nature preserve, which stretches all along Germany North to South, and beyond. (Starting with page 3).

Hessenpark Museum : Hessenpark – founded in 1974 as the central Hessian Open-Air Museum.
 http://www.hessenpark.de

The Open-Air Museum Hessenpark is a reflection of rural Hessia as it was in the past.
Over 100 buildings – a complete range of farmsteads to day laborer houses – have been reconstructed on 160 acres. As you walk through the Open-Air Museum you are guided through 400 years of Hessian history.

The Museum is organized into five groups of buildings, representing the regions they have been relocated from. These groups of buildings are named after the rivers, characterizing that particular part of the country. Hessenpark is located in the Taunus Mountains, not too far from Frankfurt.

Vieselbach, Germany 2008 : Vieselbach is a small village in Thuringia where my Dad was born. We stopped here on our way home from Weimar. It was nearly dark. Vieselbach used to be in the former East Germany, and much of the decay is still visible. However, many houses have been worked on and are looking very nice.

Weimar 2008 : Weimar, located in Thuringia, Germany, has been home to such luminaries as the poets Goethe and Schiller, Johann Sebastian Bach, Lucas Cranach, Marlene Dietrich, Martin Luther, Franz Liszt, Arthur Schoppenhauer, and many others. It's a city of culture, deep thinkers, composers, and artists. I spent an afternoon here in September 2008. You could easily spend a month here and still not have seen it all.
